Vacation Time
Back At It

Start Your Engines

We're just back home from our trip -- slightly jet lagged and certainly sluggish.  That makes today a Super Monday.  Today it is really time to . . .

On Mondays, I share things I've collected over the weekend . . . to get the week off to a good start.

A Quote

"And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it's a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end."
--- Pico Iyer

A Word

To Read

I like to think of myself as an open-minded person.  But after reading this essay in the Washington Post over the weekend, I can see that, well . . . it's a bit more complicated than that.  I think the essay is fascinating -- and especially given that I've been thinking about polymaths already, since it seems that polymaths may tend toward more open-minded thinking.

What do you think?

A Challenge

Be curious.
Challenge your own thinking.
Use "however" more than "moreover."

I hope your week is off to a good start.  I'm looking forward to catching up with all of you again!

Welcome home! I have so enjoyed your travel postcards! You saw and did some amazing things! And, yes to your challenge! Yes to being curious! Yes, to challenging my thinking! And, yes to however!

I am curious, it's the challenging my own thinking that's a little difficult on a Monday morning (but completely worth doing)! Looking forward to catching up with you!

Welcome home and thanks for that essay link. I have been thinking it is time to learn something new and stay curious.

Welcome home! I enjoyed seeing your postcards, it must have been a wonderful trip! Thanks for sharing the essay and for reminding us of the importance of "however"!

Welcome Home Kym!! I did see your IG posts and it looks like you and Tom had a fabulous trip and you did some amazing things. Wow! I especially enjoyed seeing your *cold* pictures since we have been beastly hot with heat indexes of 105 plus!

Polymath is a new word to me. I was unable to link up the essay...but will try again later.

I am curious (though as Bonny said challenging my own thinking is difficult - especially on a Monday). Also realizing I use However a lot (and almost never Moreover)!

Again, welcome home. Hoping your and Tom's re-entry isn't too difficult. Take it easy!!

Yes to more however!

Kim in Oregon

I think I have that exact same picture that I used on a Christmas card the year we went to Alaska (if that is from your Mendenhall Glacier helicopter adventure!). Glad you are home safe and eager to hear all about your adventures.

I'm SO glad you are back and I loved seeing Alaska through your postcards. Sadly, I can't read that article as I have read my limit of free articles from the Washington Post.

Your IG postcards were so wonderful to see. I looked forward each day to seeing what you had seen. The whales were fascinating. You must have so many images and experiences dancing through your heard(s). I can't wait to hear and see more. What right do we have to think we are open-minded? Every day something challenges me to open my eyes to more. It's hard to absorb all that is there.

I so enjoyed sharing your adventures through your IG pictures, and I hope reentry isn't too difficult.

I suspect we all like to think that we are open minded but the reality is quite different. I know I definitely have strong opinions about some things and it would be difficult to change them, but at the same time I'm willing to hear new views and opinions from others.

Welcome home. I hope you are able to take some time to start your engines - plenty of time to get back to your routine - as you remember your fabulous vacation.

What a wonderful photo of you two! And a great quote from Pico Iyer.

WELCOME HOME! (and super impressed to find TWO posts in my Feedly ... and it's only Tuesday!) So enjoyed following your Alaska trip (also remember a few years back and you weren't sure about Instagram ... and now look at you rocking the stories!). Thank you for sharing that essay. This line "They roam freely, listen carefully and consume omnivorously" resonated with me. I'm trying to embrace a Both/And mentality and those are key skills to make it all work.

Welcome home! Thanks so much for sharing your trip on IG -- it was so fun to follow along!
