Sometimes Monday

. . . looks entirely different.

But it's still Monday, y'know?  The start of a new week is always tough in that here-we-go-again kind of way.  But it's also an opportunity for a fresh start.  After all, a whole new week lies before us.

However you feel about Mondays, it's definitely time to  . . .

On Mondays, I'm going to share some things I've collected over the weekend . . . to start our engines and get the week off to a good start.

==========

A Quote

Each week, as I set up my calendar, I find a quote that seems appropriate for the week ahead.  Here's my quote for this week:

"If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair.  We'd never have a friendship.  We'd never go into business because we'd be cynical.  Well, that's nonsense.  You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down."
---Annie Dillard

A Word

When I read, I keep a dictionary nearby.  Usually I just use an online dictionary, but I often drag out The Real Deal just for nostalgia's sake.  I love learning new words.  Here's one I looked up last week:

(For further reading, here's an interesting little blurb about how "liminal" is not a "fancy word.")

To Read

Here's a fascinating article from The Atlantic, adapted from the book How to Disappear: Notes on Invisibility in a Time of Transparency by Akiko Busch.

A Challenge

Today, set an intention for the week.  See where it takes you.

I love the quote! And, the ending is a good reminder of how to be to actually build your wings on the way down.

Your gatherings have gotten my Monday off to a much nicer start! I especially enjoyed your word and why liminal is not a fancy word. As someone who has a real appreciation for the right word used in the right way, I agree. Too often, fancy just means relatively unknown, and what a joy it is to learn new words and make our conversations more colorful and descriptive!

Sarah

I am envious of your ability to start off Monday with so much thoughtfulness and intention! At this stage of my life, my goal for any Monday is just to make it out of bed on time!

Debbie

I am always inspired by Annie Dillard and that quote is a perfect way to begin this week! I was in charge of coordinating a big fundraising event this weekend and after months of hard work, it is over and it was a success! Today I will work on wrapping up all the details and restoring some order to my home. Here's to a great week!

I love the last line of the explanation of liminal (a word I see fairly often when reading). "Writers who apologize for using unfamiliar words seem to assume that their readers are ignorant and wish to remain that way." Thank you for the link to the Atlantic article. I have talked about being invisible with so many people. The experience of not being seen is a little stunning every time it happens (which is often). Be nimble! I may not be very nimble in my how my body is functioning, but I have had to be very nimble in mind and action. I intend to land on my feet! Great post, Kym!

Vera

What a fabulous post Kym! I love this. Great article on Invisibility, fun piece on Liminal (a word I do love - it just sounds so good). Nimble! Probably not today with my knee...but later. Oh, and I've been known to read a dictionary just for fun.

Jane

I often get the real dictionary out and look up words. Liminal is a word/idea I love. Happy Monday.

Patty

Thank-you for all of that! And the article is fascinating...as an average looking human (which I have no problem with) I've never really been objectified but I've certainly been invisible. Sometimes it is pretty disturbing but...I just choose to think they've missed out! ;-) (Or I've dodged a bullet!)

Carole

This is a really thoughtful and intentional way of starting the week. It's perfect and I love it!

Mary

Wonderful collection of ideas, Kym ... perfect for a Monday!

Dee

Very good quote.

I love your quote. I feel like we are growing wings around here for sure these days. Jump and the parachute will appear, as one saying I know goes. I have to be pushed. I don't jump!

Chloe

I just bought a new real dictionary to replace my old one and wondered if it had become redundant. Thanks for the reassurance. Most of the cliffs I have jumped off of have helped me build hew wings, but a few have resulted in some broken ones. It sometimes helps to look before you leap.
