Sticking With It

I used to be addicted to my snooze bar when it came to waking up.  Like . . . I used to purposefully set my alarm for an hour or more before I actually needed to wake up . . . just so I could hit the snooze - repeatedly - before finally dragging my sorry a$$ out of bed in the morning.

It was getting ridiculous.  (Especially because I got out of the habit of paying attention to my alarm, and sometimes didn't even "notice" it anymore.)

So I decided to break myself of the habit.  I got a new alarm clock with a new and highly annoying alarm.  I moved it across the room so I would have to actually get out of bed when it went off.  And I made a commitment to myself to keep moving once I got up and shut off the alarm.

It's been 18 months now.  And it's working!


It was hard for those first couple of weeks.  I SO wanted to just hit the snooze bar and head back to my bed.  But I didn't!  I have trained myself to be an early riser (I am not, by nature, an early riser), and I'm finding that I actually like it.  I've discovered a few benefits to consistently getting up early (three, in fact!):

First, I've developed a nice, quiet routine for myself in the morning.  I let the dogs out and feed them, grab a cup of coffee, knit a few rows.  Once I feel awake, I usually meditate -- which all helps me start the day relaxed and centered.

Next, I'm more ready (as in alert and aware) to get started with my day.  Allowing myself the time to wake up gradually and mindfully means I'm not feeling stressed and rushed when it is time to get going . . . with whatever I've got going.

Finally, after 18 months of getting up early (and without a snooze bar fest), I've gotten to the point where I barely need an alarm clock anymore.  I just naturally. . . wake up . . . at the same time every morning.  I'm also sleeping better at night.  

There are still mornings where I'm tempted to crawl back in bed.  But I don't.  And once I'm up . . . I'm up.  This is one of those habits I'm really happy to be sticking with!

Hurray for morning people! I am an early riser, 5:30 everyday. I love it for the same benefits you've found. The early morning is so amazing. The quiet, the birds, the sky, no matter the time of year it amazes me. Mylo and I would walk in the dark during the winter and always heard and seen amazing things (a great horned owl!) Morning is my favorite time of day. My routine has had to change, but I cannot change the time I wake. I still love it.

I've been an early riser since I graduated from college. I'm happiest when I get up right before sunrise, which means around 5 am or so in the summer!


I am a morning person, maybe that’s why my profession is a nurse (or was, I am retired). I wake up by 6am usually. And . . . my internal clock practically shuts down by 4pm, which is why I try to get things done by then, including most of the evening meal.
Mornings are my favorite as they are; cooler, quieter, and allows one to wake up gently without much conversation or interruption. I don’t stay in bed, my arthritis sees to it that I wake up stiff and achy thus I get a move on, but gently.


I always used to sleep until about 9:30 or 10:00 on weekends/holidays, until my first cancer surgery. Then, all of a sudden, I was being awakened by a crowd of students and drs for Morning Rounds, usually between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. After a week of this, once I got home, I've never looked back. Now when I "sleep in," it's maybe until 6:30 or 7 a.m. I LOVE the morning!


Getting up and getting going is something I've always struggled with. I'm not naturally an early riser, and it just feels so delicious to roll over and stay in bed for a while. But I decided to try and cultivate the habit of walking first thing in the morning when you wrote about Diane a few weeks ago. I set my alarm for 5:30, get dressed, and walk out the door. I need to wake up gradually, but walking lets me do that, and I can't resist patting myself on the back when I'm done. So far, so good!


I've been an early riser all my life (and find it hard to stay up past 10 p.m. or so). My alarm clock is across the room from the bed (it used to be on my nightstand, but then I turned it off one morning and was late for my first day at a new job ! - LOL). Work days the alarm goes off at 5:30 and I'm up. Weekends I don't set an alarm but am usually up by 6 a.m.

The morning stillness (quiet) and peaceful quality are perfect for "me" time (Fletch gets up quite a bit later). Like you, I'll let Tyg in and feed him, make coffee and sit and relax. Some days I knit some rows, some days I read, some days I write. Some days I just sit and think (or don't think so much). I find that on those rare days I might sleep in and don't get that time to myself I feel out of sorts all day long.

Oh boy. Im such a night owl. Waking up is so hard to do. But now that the sun is up earlier I'm better. I do not like to rush out of the house at all!!!! So i rarely make appointments for morning!!! Drives my beloved crazy..he's a rooster


I've always been an early riser and even now that I'm retired I'm usually up at 5:30 and by six I'm either headed to the gym or out for a long walk. Then, if I opted for the gym, I take the dog for a walk, feed her, & have my breakfast. I love having a quiet, slow start to the day. At this time of year I enjoy having my coffee and reading out on the patio.


Another early riser here! I like to be up by 6 or 6:30, even on the weekends. (Although, reading these comments, there are plenty of earlier risers than me!) I do NOT use the snooze bar, never have. In fact, I don't usually need an alarm. When I go to sleep I just tell myself when I need to wake up and I almost always do. If it's critical that I'm up by a certain time for a trip or something special then I will set an alarm but I almost always wake up before it goes off. On the other hand, I am married to a snooze alarm addict. Dale sets FIVE alarms on his iPhone for every week day morning. The first one goes off at 5am and I think he finally gets up around 5:30 or so. I don't know why he can't just set one alarm for 5:30 but there's no changing him at this point, I guess.


I too like to get up early, but I do not get out of bed during the week until after Steve has left the house for work. He is Mr. Chatty and I am not that first thing. He leaves for work about 515 every morning, so I am up shortly after that. It is simply the best part of the day.


I am a night owl, sorely wishing I was an early bird.

When I was living in Italy (1990's) I had my radio on a timer to go off about 5am. The radio was set to Radio MonteBene which was classical music. It was so pleasant to wake to calming music each morning. It was also (because of the timer) set to go 'off' which if it did and I was still in bed was my signal to really get my A$$ moving as I was running late. It was a great way to wake up each morning.


I used to be exactly the same -- snoozefest every morning! But for the past year or so, I've been using the alarm on my FitBit to wake up. It buzzes/vibrates when it goes off, and I have to tap it repeatedly to get it to go off, which is just enough to wake me up. And I've found that I have an easier time in the morning now. Like you, I like to ease into my day, so getting up easily means I have more time to check my e-mail, sip my coffee, and contemplate the day ahead.


I set the 5:20 alarm and snooze on exercise snooze only. The rest of the week and weekends up around 6:30. (I feel like Saturday and Sunday are so valuable I can't waste any time lounging around in bed when I can be lounging downstairs knitting or reading or watching!) I also like a few minutes of quiet knitting and sitting time. I do not like to rush out the door! Congrats on changing it up!


Early rising does not come naturally to me. I'd much prefer to roll over for 15 more minutes, then 15 more etc. I discipline myself to just get up when the alarm rings. Sounds like you have found something that works for you. Hooray.


Total morning person here, too! I love beginning my day in the quiet dark. and living where we do, it's dark until about 6am even in the summer. It remember how weird it felt in Madison to get up at 5am and see the sun!
