A Brief Trip Down Memory Lane
Sometimes Mondays

Hurray for Hollywood

After months of movie-watching, we've finally arrived . . . it's Oscar time!

But -- as you can see by my Oscar checklist, I'm still missing one major movie:  Call Me By Your Name.  I've really been sweating this one . . . because it just hasn't hit the theaters here yet.  Until today!  I'll be seeing it tonight -- solo.  (Because Tom is out of town for a curling tournament.) (Talk about under the wire.)

Just in case you want to catch some of the nominated films before the Oscars on Sunday, here's a quick run-down on home viewing availability:

Rent ($5.99) or purchase ($14.99) via iTunes:

  • Darkest Hour
  • Lady Bird
  • The Shape of Water
  • Three Billboards...

Rent ($5.99) or purchase ($9.99) via iTunes:

  • Get Out
  • Dunkirk

Purchase ($14.99) via iTunes:

  • Call Me By Your Name

Sorry, but not available yet (although you can pre-order):

  • The Post
  • Phantom Thread

My particular favorites this year?  The Shape of Water and Lady Bird.  I really liked Get Out, Darkest Hour, The Post and Three Billboards, too.  Dunkirk is just not my genre . . . and I was not a fan of Phantom Thread.  (And, of course, I will have no opinion on Call Me By Your Name until later this evening, although I have a feeling I'm going to like it.)

How about you?  What's your favorite movie this year?

If you want to get in on some of the movies nominated in other categories, you can also rent (on iTunes) I, Tonya (Margot Robbie), The Florida Project (Willem DaFoe), and The Big Sick (screen play).  You can catch Mudbound (Mary J. Blige) on Netflix.

And if you geek out over the movies, you might enjoy taking this little Oscars quiz from the New York Times.

Have a great weekend -- and have fun at the movies!

Wow -you are so organized! Enjoy your movie and the awards ceremony. Will there be special snacks?

I’m very impressed! This is the first year that we have only seen two movies with a Oscar related nomination, Get Out and Mudbound. Maybe next year we will do better! Enjoy the show!

You are organized for sure! I saw 3 Billboards last night and really liked it. that's the only one I've seen so far. Enjoy your weekend - stay warm!!

I am suitably impressed with your movie knowledge! I have queued up Mudbound and will try and watch this weekend! XO

I'm fairly oblivious when it comes to movies, but I love that I get so much movie information from you! The Shape of Water sounds so unique and intriguing that I'm very tempted to make an effort to see it. Have fun seeing Call Me By Your Name and celebrating the Oscars!

Thank you so much for the run down of prices and availability of at home movie viewing!

I didn't try very hard :-( but did see 3 Billboards and may go see The Shape of Water on Sunday afternoon...even if I go by myself! Enjoy your show! And Oscar night will be fun! xo

I'm trying to plan food for the Oscars now and so far the only thing I know we have to have for sure is hardboiled eggs. LOL

I've seen more movies this time than ever before! I liked Shape of Water and Get Out. I'm back and forth over which I'd like to win! I don't want to see Dunkirk and I thought Darkest Hour was a little too long and tedious. What's with the make up on Churchill? It never moved! (Therefore, it bugged me!) I liked Lady Bird, but have not seen the others. I'll see at Call Me next week (I decided to go solo at least once a week) and I think I'm going to like it, too. ANYWAY! Here's to the Oscars, which I think I'm going to enjoy this year.

We haven't gone to many movies since the boys were young, although we did see the last two Star Wars movies with them, but we are dipping our toes back into the cinematic world -- Dunkirk last year, The Post a couple weeks ago. I just have to watch the ads for our local theater (singular) because the really good movies come and go fairly quickly.

Now that the Oscars have happened - it's official - you're a good judge!! We saw Get Out (Sara's suggestion), and that's it! I'm looking forward to Lady Bird, Shape of Water and The Post... as soon as they hit Netflix.
