Because this song has been running through my head since turning the calendar over on Saturday. . .
September.
Already.
My. That was fast!
This week, Carole has us thinking about Ten Things We Love About September:
- Gotta love a month that begins with a 3-day weekend!
- The weather is generally wonderful -- still warm and summery, but with an edge.
- And the nights are cooler, and comfortable for sleeping.
- It's a great time to garden! This is the best time of year for dividing perennials, thinning things out, and moving plants around. (Planting perennials now gives them plenty of time to establish a great root system for spring.)
- Also. . . all the nurseries are having everything-must-go clearance sales on their remaining plant stock. This is the best time of year to shop the nurseries! (And not only for plants. You can also get great bargains on "hardscape" -- benches, sculpture, furniture, etc.)
- A return to the Empty Nest. I love my kids. But I love my life when they're tucked away on campus . . . or busy with grown-up life.
- I even love it when other people's kids are back in school. . . and the gym locker room and the library and even the grocery store are, well, kid-free!
- The bounty of the season explodes in September! So many fresh vegetables and fruits and herbs are available in September.
- September always heralds a return to routine - getting back to my "regular" schedule. I'm usually ready at this point in the season.
- September = Fresh Start for me. I guess I'm deeply aligned with the academic calendar, but September seems like a beginning point for me, much more than January. (And you're going to hear more about that in the weeks to come!)
How about YOU? What do you love about September?

Our lists sure are similar today and I agree. I don't have a kid moving back into the dorm and I'm adjusting to that but I'm also missing the empty nest of the last 2 years. Is this a good time to buy ornamental grasses? There are a couple I'd like to get and they are on sale at my local nursery but I've never planted them before so I wasn't sure if this was the right time or not. Oh, and I've always loved that Earth Wind and Fire song because it's about the 21st night of September - MY birthday!

I couldn't agree with you more. September has always seemed like the best time for fresh starts to me. I have some dividing and moving of plants planned for this month- making space to redo the kitchen garden next spring.

September is a very beautiful month, full of the beauty and bounty of nature. Mother Nature started this month with a bang, thunderstorms (all night Saturday) and much cooler temps. Fall has arrived!

I always seem to be in sync with the school calendar myself. Must be all these years of practice!

I've always loved fall and September is when it starts around here. If we could have 12 months of September that would be just about right! ;)

I smiled when I saw the safety cones at the crosswalks this morning. I leave for work at the perfect time -- the crossing guards have arrived but not yet the kids.
I planted most of my perennial garden several years ago with practically free plants from the nursery at this time of year and they've done better than almost anything else I've ever planted. I'm a believer.

My husband does all of the gardening, and he's been plotting about where to move perennials that he'll split!

I just planted (had our hired teenage helper plant, actually) a perennial garden outside our front door. Earlier this summer he uprooted all the wild raspberries in that area, which were threatening to take over the house and garage. Yay for end-of-season plant sales! I think I still need 4 or 5 hosta, plus having the kid transplant ferns from the edge of the woods elsewhere into the back edge of the garden. That should make a nice transition between cultivated space and let-it-go-wild space.

Your gardening reminders are good. I must move a few things around this month....for next years beauty.
I look forward to the tall grasses in my yard sending up their lovely plumes and the mums ....mums every where
